StorytellingThis session will be presented at the <a href="http://www.rctsd.ca/letnesk/index.htm">Prairie South Teachers' Convention</a> on February 22/06.<br /><a href="http://www.mjsd1.ca/%7Erbl/ppt/Storytelling.ppt">Download the PPT</a>.<br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">What is Digital Storytelling?</span><br /><br /><blockquote>Short version is that it the use of multimedia (images, video, audio and text) to tell meaningful stories that illicit an emotional response beyond the fact based presentation of ideas. Some stricter definitions stress the use of all these media, however, I'm a bit more loose in my definition to include any stories that include 2 forms.<br /></blockquote><span style="font-size:130%;"><br />Why we would use Digital Storytelling?</span><br /><br /><blockquote>This is the way we best communicate. Purpose and Audience are essential ingredients for storytelling. Web publishing is an intergal part of digital storytelling. Sharing with the world beyond your classroom and including personal connection brings motivation and meaning to student work.</blockquote><span style="font-size:130%;"><br />Examples:</span><br /><br /><ul><li><a href="http://www.archive.org/details/Stop_Motion_Animation">Stop Animation</a>....created by a grade 9 student in Moose Jaw. style="font-size:180%;">What is Flickr?</span><br />A photo sharing site that goes beyond the basics.<br /><br />It can:<br /><ul><li>store photos (upload up to 20MB per month)</li><li>share photos (send invitations)</li><li>tag photos (for easy finding and sharing)</li><li>add notes to your photos</li><li>add and receive comments </li><li>create sets or albums (limit of 3 with the free version) It may not be a ‘deep’ site, but it’s a nice layout for searching through tags.</li><li><a href="http://metaatem.net/words.php" target="_blank">Spell with Flickr</a>: I love this one. Spells out words of your choice by using photos tagged with specific letters. Great for building logos as well! <a href="http://jade.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/alan/archives/2005/03/29/speller.php">Alan has a script</a> that will load up different images each time someone visits your site.</li><li><a href="http://www.airtightinteractive.com/projects/related_tag_browser/app/" target="_blank">Flickr Related Tag Browser</a>: This one is fantastic. A visual way to see photos that match a tag, but it also puts related tags in a ring around it. Cool and useful.</li><li><a href="http://www.tom-carden.co.uk/p5/flickr_rainbow_links_fixed/applet/index.html" target="_blank">Flickr Rainbow</a>: Sort of a fluffy one. It creates a rainbow using words tagged with the appropriate colors. However, since it only uses the tag, the rainbow doesn’t really LOOK so much like a rainbow all the time. For example, the tag “Blue” may have a picture of someone depressed.</li><li><a href="http://www.marumushi.com/apps/flickrgraph/flickrgraph.cfm" target="_blank">FlickrGraph</a>: One of the best Flickr extensions out there. I had trouble getting it to work with Firefox though. Visually shows how social networks are built. It’s really amazing. If you only check out one of these sites, check this one out.</li><li><a href="http://www.mappr.com/" target="_blank">Mappr</a>: Organizes recently uploaded photos by location. So photos taken in Chicago will be put over Chicago on the map.</li><li><a href="http://www.kokogiak.com/flickreplacr.html" target="_blank">Flickr Replacer</a>: I had trouble coming up with the word during the podcast, but this is perfect for creating a rebus! It’s a bookmarklet, and if you highlight a word and click on it, a picture will be substituted for the words.</li><li><a href="http://www.speirs.org/flickrexport/" target="_blank">Flickr Export Plugin for iPhoto</a>: Speaking of iPhoto and Flickr, this creates a new tab in the export window to send photos straight to Flickr. I’ve find it to be slightly flaky at times, but I have successfully uploaded all of my 1500 photos using it. Once again, an absolute necessity for OS X users.</li><li><a href="http://pchere.blogspot.com/2005/03/great-flickr-tools-collection.html" target="_blank">The Great Flickr Tools Collection</a>: This post has a bazillion Flickr tips and tricks. I think I covered most of the good ones, but if you’re starting to et into Flickr, then this is a great site to visit. Way more extensive than what I have here!<br /> </li></ul>DRShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15055490866531065692noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18233675.post-1130891105494678672005-11-01T18:24:00.000-06:002005-11-01T18:25:05.496-06:00Intro to computers Day 3Let's review:<br /><p></p><ul><li>File management and storage</li><li>Search engines and searching techniques</li><li><a href="http://google.com">Google</a></li><li><a href="http://clusty.com">Clusty</a><br /></li></ul>Some topics we may cover:<br /><br /><br />Email<br /><br /><ul><li><a href="http://hotmail.com">Hotmail</a><br /></li></ul><br />Recipes<br /><br /><ul><li><a href="http://allrecipes.com/">All recipes</a></li><li><a href="http://www.kraftfoods.com/kf">Kraft recipes</a><br /></li></ul><br />Hotels and Travel<br /><br /><ul><li><a href="http://maps.google.com">Google Maps</a></li><li><a href="http://expedia.ca">Expedia.ca</a><br /></li></ul><br />Cards<br /><br /><ul><li><a href="https://www.mycardmaker.com">My Card maker</a><br /></li></ul>Genealogy<br /><br /><ul><li><a href="http://www.collectionscanada.ca/genealogy/index-e.html">Canadian Genealogy Collection</a></li></ul><a href="http://ebay.ca">Ebay</a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/DummiesArticle/id-350.html">Creating and Managing User Accounts in Windows XP</a>DRShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15055490866531065692noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18233675.post-1130208620352617812005-11-01T18:15:00.000-06:002005-11-01T18:23:58.373-06:00Introduction to ComputersLast week we looked at the following:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.atlguide2000.com/windowsxp/index.php?act=view&aid=15">Display Settings</a><br /><ul><li>Changing backgrounds</li></ul><ul><li>Screen Savers</li></ul><a href="http://www.helpwithpcs.com/tipsandtricks/home%20explorer.htm">Setting the Home Page</a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.kpbsd.k12.ak.us/tutor/favorites/setFavorites/default.htm">Adding and Managing Favorites</a><br /><br />Changing text sizes<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://familyinternet.about.com/library/graphics/ie021203.gif"><img style="WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: pointer" alt="" src="http://familyinternet.about.com/library/graphics/ie021203.gif" border="0" area="72600" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:130%;"><br />Links we visited:</span><br /><br /><br /><ul><li><a href="http://www.discovermoosejaw.com/">Discover Moose Jaw</a></li><li><a href="http://www.citymoosejaw.com/">City of Moose Jaw</a></li><li><a href="http://www.cbc.ca/sask/">CBC</a></li><li><a href="http://maps.google.com/">Google Maps</a></li></ul><p><br />After reviewing the above skills and items, we'll look at how and where files are stored, how to find them and how to save them.<br /><br />Before you leave tonight, click on comments and let me know what things you'd still like to learn and also tell me what your interests are and I'll find some great websites for you interests....See you all next week.<br /><br /><span style="font-size:180%;"><span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">Day 3<br /><span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold"><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /></span></span></span></span><br />Let's review:<br /></p><ul><li>File management and storage</li><li>Search engines and searching techniques</li><li><a href="http://google.com">Google</a></li><li><a href="http://clusty.com">Clusty</a><br /></li></ul>Some topics we may cover:<br /><br /><br />Email<br /><br /><ul><li><a href="http://hotmail.com">Hotmail</a><br /></li></ul><br />Recipes<br /><br /><ul><li><a href="http://allrecipes.com/">All recipes</a></li><li><a href="http://www.kraftfoods.com/kf">Kraft recipes</a><br /></li></ul><br />Hotels and Travel<br /><br /><ul><li><a href="http://maps.google.com">Google Maps</a></li><li><a href="http://expedia.ca">Expedia.ca</a><br /></li></ul><br />Cards<br /><br /><ul><li><a href="https://www.mycardmaker.com">My Card maker</a><br /></li></ul>Genealogy<br /><br /><ul><li><a href="http://www.collectionscanada.ca/genealogy/index-e.html">Canadian Genealogy Collection</a></li></ul><a href="http://ebay.ca">Ebay</a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/DummiesArticle/id-350.html">Creating and Managing User Accounts in Windows XP</a>DRShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15055490866531065692noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18233675.post-1130815947777410142005-10-31T21:23:00.000-06:002005-11-01T11:39:08.873-06:00Wikis for Collaborative WritingA Wiki at its simplest, is an editable webpage.<br /><br />Today we will consider 3 wiki tools. There are a gazillion services but here are three I'm familiar with that we'll take a look at. We'll examine how we might set them up and more importantly, how we can use these in the classroom and beyond.<br /><br />Let's start with a demonstration of:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.jot.com/video/What%20is%20a%20wiki.html">What is a wiki?</a><br /><br />This is the most famous use of a wiki<br /><br /><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/En">Wikipedia</a><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">Wiki tools</span><br /><br /><a href="http://wikispaces.com/">Wikispaces</a><br /><ul> <li><a href="http://moosejaw.wikispaces.com/">My wikispace</a></li><li>This is a free site with unlimited pages and uploads...not a bad deal!<br /></li> </ul> <a href="http://writely.com/">Writely</a><br /><ul> <li><a href="http://www.writely.com/View.aspx?docid=ac3f5tg8czht">My writely page</a></li><li>Works much like a word processor</li><li>Also has the ability to upload documents and create multiple pages<br /> </li> </ul><a href="http://www.jot.com/index.php">Jotspot</a><br /><ul><li><a href="http://mjsd1.jot.com/WikiHome">Assessment Site</a><br /> </li> <li>Free for 5 users and 20 pages. Nice place for uploading documents as well.<br /></li> </ul><br /><br /><a href="http://www.furl.net/members/mj161?enc=UTF-8&search=browse&sort=&dir=&pos=&keyword=&amp;amp;amp;amp;x=22&y=5&category=279175&date=0">Additional Links</a>DRShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15055490866531065692noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18233675.post-1130449719055088872005-10-28T14:13:00.000-06:002005-10-29T10:08:49.236-06:00Digital Imagery<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/8114/709/1600/7396205_07d6b0856d_m.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; CURSOR: pointer" alt="" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/8114/709/200/7396205_07d6b0856d_m.jpg" border="0" area="30000" /></a><br />Good morning. With coffee in hand we'll have a relaxing morning together trying to make the most of our images.<br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Downloading and Storing</span><br /><br />Once we've downloaded our images, storing and sorted is always an issue. Let's begin by creating folders for various categories of our pictures. This <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/learnmore/folders.mspx">Microsoft tutorial </a>may be helpful.<br /><br />Google's <a href="http://www.download.com/Picasa/3000-2193_4-10356847.html?tag=lst-0-1">Picasa</a>, is a free program that sorts and organizes your photos as well. After we download, we'll look at some of its features.<br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">Photo Editing</span><br /><br />You may find this is all you need for basic editing. If you want a bit more powerful tool, let's try <a href="http://www.irfanview.com/">IrfanView</a><br /><br />The best lower end image editing product is <a href="http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopelwin/main.html">Adobe Photoshop Elements</a> which is a more user friendly version of the industry standard Adobe Photoshop.<br /><span style="font-size:130%;"><br />Online Sharing and Storage</span><br /><br />Emailing photos can be an issue for storage and download time. A more effective tool is online storage. <a href="http://flickr.com/">Flickr</a> is the most versatile web service available. <a href="http://www.mjsd1.ca/~rbl/flickr.htm">Learn more</a>.<br /><br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">Printing</span><br /><br />Printing photos on your computer is convenient but is somewhat costly and challenging to do correctly. Walmart offers online photo printing for 25cents a picture. Windows makes it very easy to send pictures to Walmart. Download and install their <a href="http://www.walmartphotocentre.ca/walmartcanada/control/main?lang=EN">client</a>. And the rest is very straightforward. Don't pay till you pick them up. They are usually ready the next day.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.qoop.com/photobooks/flickr_user/">Qoop </a>will print your Flickr photos in a book or poster form.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.englaze.com/flickr/archivr.aspx">Englaze</a> will archive all your photos to DVD and even do a slideshow for you.DRShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15055490866531065692noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18233675.post-1130168692975079942005-10-24T09:24:00.000-06:002005-10-25T09:42:24.746-06:00Google EarthHere are the links we'll explore at our workshop.<br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;"><a href="http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html">Google Earth</a></span> <ul> <li><a href="http://www.googleearthing.com/">Google Earthing</a>...a weblog of various unknown satellite images.
